Przedpremierowa specyfikacja kolejnego Dell Dimension XPS

Pracownik firmy współpracującej z Dell'em, zajmujący się testowaniem nowej platformy, który został zwolniony z pracy z powodów personalnych, ujawnił kilka informacji, które jeszcze przez jakiś czas miały być powszechnie nieznane, mowa tu super-tajnym projekcie, czyli piątej (lub szóstej) generacji Dell Dimension XPS. Który ma być zbudowany z m.in. karty graficznej ATI Xaveon XT, jest to najsilniejszy układ z serii Xaveon, która ukaże się w czterech wersjach Xaveon XT, Xaveon Pro, Xaveon oraz Xaveon HD, z czego ostatni chociaż zegary ma znacznie niższe niż wersja XT, jest wyposażony w chip Theater 600HD. Ponadto karty mogą pracować w trybie AMR (Ati Multi Rendering), który daje im przyspieszenie w grach od 60 do ponad 95% względem pojedynczej karty i ponad 2.5x przyspieszenie względem dwóch GeForce 6800 Ultra w SLI! Urządzenia miały być zaprezentowane przez ATI dopiero na Computex 2005 na początku czerwca.

Kolejną innowacją jest jedno-rdzeniowy procesor The Special Edition Pentium 4 taktowany zegarem 4GHz, wyposażony w 2MB Cache L2 (na obrazku jest błąd), pracujący z FSB 1066MHz i wspierający technologie XD, EM64T i prawdopodobnie EIST. Jego sprzedawcą będzie wyłącznie Dell.
Także WD (Western Digital) jest gotowy do sprzedaży swojego nowego dziecka z serii Raptor, jest to 146GB wersja „twardziela” "kręcąca się" z prędkością 10.000 rpm, pojedynczy napęd kosztuje $400, nowy Dimension XPS będzie posiadał cztery takie dyski.

"(1) The ATI Xaveon with multiple VPU setups (i.e. AMR) is for real, and a small in-house demonstration showed the XPS hooked up to four - yes, 4 of Dell's 24" LCD's! They seemed to be running at their native resolution of 1920x1200, even with games.

Half-Life 2 does not run multiple monitors correctly as of yet, but updates to the Source engine with the Aftermath expansion will indeed do up to three monitors. We did see Far Cry running on three monitors with a couple of minor glitches, but that showed great potential. They was no clarification about AA or FSAA at that time, but the monitors were all set to 1920x1200.

The Xaveon will be released in four flavors - Xaveon XT, Xaveon Pro, Xaveon, and Xaveon HD. ATI claims a consistent 60% to 95% increase in game performance with AMR, and a full 2.5x increase over two GeForce 6800 Ultras in SLI mode. The Xaveon HD of particular interest will ship at speeds slightly lower than the XT, but will include ATI's unannounced Theatre 600HD chip - and that name says it all. The Xaveon series will be launched by other manufacturers at the same time.

(2) The Soundblaster Audigy 3 was not on target, and will not be released until approximately Q4. Last I heard, it will come under a different name. The newer ad is with an Audigy 4 Pro.

(3) The Special Edition Pentium 4 is a single-core processor running default at 4.0GHz. It will apparently ship with the 955X Chipset in very, very limited quantities. The 4MB L2 Cache is wrong, and will only be 2MB. But this processor runs at 3990MHz with H/T on a 1066MHz FSB. Dell claimed it would outrun the upcoming Athlon 64 FX 57 on almost all gaming benchmarks. It was also possible Dell would include overclocking similar to the Pentium D 840 EE (maybe up to 4.25GHz). Please note that only Dell will be selling this CPU! If you thought Dell was in bed with Intel before, consider this their lovechild.

(4) Dell includes a mounting bracket to convert one of the external drive slots into a fourth internal hard-drive slot, allowing for the advertised 4-drive setup. Dell might also offer RAID 5 support for this setup.

(5) WD is ready to ship a 146GB version of its 10,000RPM Raptor line, although the drives will cost over $400 each. The drives have native command queuing and will perform even better than the current 74GB versions. Dell seems to have an exclusive on this one for at least a month. There was also initial talk about a 500GB 7200RPM release, but that has been postponed.

(6) The S-ATA version of the DVD±RW drives with the larger cache is everything short of confirmed, and will be manufactured by Samsung. Klipsch seems ready to release their new 7.1 system. This will also remain a Dell exclusive until Q4. The Logitech MX1100 is being renamed to the MX1000 Pro, and the Cordless Elite will carry a Dell branding. Microsoft Plus! 2005 has been canned until the release of Longhorn.
